Eating healthy through the 5:2 fasting diet plan builds a strong foundation for weight loss. One other important aspect to achieving improved health and fitness is through exercise. When diet and exercise are combined you will lose weight, gain strength and feel better. One easy way to get your body moving to burn calories is by using a treadmill.

Treadmills are excellent pieces of exercise equipment because they allow you to work out at home, whenever you want to. You don’t have to worry about traveling in bad weather to a gym. In fact, you won’t have to worry about gym fees at all! Plus, as treadmills are so popular in the gym, there is often a waiting line to use them. When you have your own there is no waiting… you can jump on it and go anytime you are ready.

Reasons To Buy A Treadmill

Many people may ask the question… “Why would I buy a treadmill when I can go for a run or walk down the street?” That’s a fair enough question and one that I also used to ask.

But since using a treadmill, I have discovered many reasons why I definitely prefer to use one, rather than simply going for a run outside. Here is what I have found:

It’s Easier

To me, it seems easier to run on a treadmill. I know I can run further and longer than if I run around the streets. I think a bit of this has to do with the shock absorption systems built into many of the better treadmills. They have a bit of shock absorption that may rebound some of your energy back (sort of like having springs on your feet). It’s only subtle, but I think this helps. Some may think this is cheating a little, but I think anything that makes exercise more enjoyable is generally a good thing.

Less Impact

In addition to the above, the shock absorption means that the impact on your legs (ankles, knees), hips, back, etc, is less. This makes it more pleasant generally, but also possibly makes it better for those prone to injuries.

Get Into a Rhythm Easier

I find when running around the streets, it can be hard to get into a good rhythm. This can be for a number of reasons… you are constantly watching out for:

  • Cracks/holes in the pavement
  • Other pedestrians
  • Dogs
  • Cars
  • Etc…

as well as stopping at intersections when crossing roads, running up and down hills, etc. All these things mean that you can’t get into a good rhythm.

On a treadmill, you don’t have any of this. You just set the speed, and if you are keen, also the angle of incline, and away you go. You can put on your headphones and not worry about looking out for traffic and just get in the zone, and punch out a few miles or km a lot easier.

Easily Measure Your Progress

As mentioned above, you can easily set your speed and incline angle. Then you can easily compare how you are progressing. If you struggle, then you might want to look at why (eg. Sleep, food, alcohol, hydration, etc can all affect your performance). If you know that you did your last session with relative ease, then you might want to increase your speed by half an mph or kph and see how you go. Unlike running around the streets, everything is measurable.

You Can Walk or Run Anytime…

in the safety of your own home. Regardless of the time of day or the weather, you can hit the treadmill. You have no more excuses.

Reduce Injuries

I don’t know about you, but when I go for a run around the streets or through the park, I tend to worry about stepping the wrong way on something and rolling my ankle. Because you are constantly planting your feet on different surfaces, you have to be very careful where you put every footstep. On a treadmill, you don’t have to worry nearly as much about this… the surface is flat and consistent.

I used to be one of those who would say “Why would you run on a treadmill?”, but after doing it now for quite a while, I can easily understand why many people favor the treadmill. I totally understand that some prefer to run around the streets, in the park, or down at the beach, but you have to try different things and find what works for you.

So I believe using a treadmill is a great idea. But there are quite a few on the market to choose from. This is why we have put together a list of our picks of the best treadmills for home use below…
